Queen City Theatre Company brings to Charlotte, under the direction of Glenn T. Griffin the regional premiere of the provocative thriller ROPE by Patrick Hamilton. “Rope" was brought to the screen in 1948 by Alfred Hitchcock has been successfully revived twice on the London stage in 1992 and most recently in 2009. “Rope” tells the complex story of Wyndham Brandon and Charles Granillo, two brilliant young men who decided to murder their Oxford classmate, Ronald Kentley, as an intellectual exercise; they want to prove their superiority by committing the "perfect murder". After hiding the body in a large antique wooden chest, Brandon and Charles host a dinner party at their apartment, the guests begin to arrive. The guests, unaware of what has happened, include the victim’s father Sir Johnstone Kentley, and aunt Mrs. Debenham. Also there is his girlfriend, Leila Arden and her former lover Kenneth Raglan. In a subtle move, Brandon uses the chest containing the body as a buffet for the food. ROPE is a classic thriller and yet it is one of the most provocative thrillers ever written due to the homoerotic connotations throughout the play and the obvious homosexual relationship between the two main characters. This was no doubt a factor that made of this show one of the most controversial shows ever written and precursor of many other similar plays and movies throughout the century that explore the intricate human relationships and minds. A provocative homo-erotic thriller that will have the whole city talking. Directed by Glenn T. Griffin Contains Adult Content. Recommended for ages 18 and over. |
